Cuba Solidarity 2019
One of our ministers (James) will be traveling to Havana, Cuba from December 11-13 using the "support for the Cuban people" exception to the unfair and inhumane US embargo/sanctions against the people of Cuba.
So as a way to provide "support for the Cuban people," James will be bringing a suitcase (or two) of humanitarian relief supplies which will be shared with three different religious communities in Cuba, including:
- Jewish
I have been in touch with the The Saloman Mitrani Senior Center at Sinagoga Centro Sefardi (at Calle 17 between E & F in Havana) and they have asked that I bring the following donations:
- Powderd milk
- Vitamins
- Over the counter medicines for coughs, colds, allergies.
- Anti-fungal creams
- Islamic
The Muslim community in Cuba is fairly small but growing. I haven't been able to be successful in reaching anyone in the community via email (internet acess is still fairly expensive for most people in Cuba) but I have learned where they meet for prayers, so I plan to bring an assortment of humanitarian supplies to their gathering. I also have learned that most Muslims in Cuba are converts (with most not being fluent in Arabic) so I hope to bring a few Spanish language translations of the Quran for this community.
- Christian
Currently there is a struggle by progressive Christians in Cuba who are working to ensure LGBTQ equality in the midst of opposition by right-wing Christian fundamentalists. To show support for the progressive Christian community, I'm planning on bringing some of the humanitarian supplies for their community. Most likely I will be connecting with the Episcopal church in Havana for this, but I have also heard reports that there is a an effort to plant a Metropolitan Community Church (an LGBTQ-focused denomination) in Havana, and so I may bring supplies to them as well.
If you would like to donate to help James with the cost of buying the humanitarian relief supplies that will be delivered on this trip, you can do so via the following options:
